Besides warm milk, melatonin, 5-HTP and valerian you can find other remedies in web searches for "natural sleep aids" and "natural sleep remedies".

A list of things I’ve tried for sleep since 1982 is at http://www.fms-help.com/sleep.htm I’ve had insomnia since I was 16. My story is at http://www.fms-help.com/insomnia.htm If over the counter sleep aids, melatonin, etc. don’t work well for you, check out my list. Also, you might have to see a doc. If you do, find one who is sympathetic with your problem and will listen if you say a certain med or dosage is not working well for you. I had to try a lot of things before finding what I am on today. Everyone with insomnia is different, so you may have to experiment some. A list of things I use now is at http://www.fms-help.com/what.htm

Try melatonin. Take a small dose on an empty stomach. If it doesn’t work, take a bigger dose. Three mg should be enough, but too much is as bad as too little.

Be sure to only be in bed the hours you want to sleep, and don’t do anything in bed except sleep. Get up on time regardless of whether you sleep. Try to get some bright light early in the morning.

friend meganzss3 said:
Hi,

this might sound silly, but you could try some cookies or something a while before you go to lie down, just enough to help have a sugar ‘crash’ – but not enough to keep you up.

like someone before me said, don’t do anything in bed except sleep.

if you can’t fall asleep in 15-20 minutes, get up and do something like read a book for 25-30 minutes and then try to fall asleep again.

try deepening your breathing while you lay there.

try relaxation – start at your toes, tense them and then relax them, then your ankles, shins, etc… up to your butt, then start on your fingers and work up to shoulders, then torso, then to your face and head, and if necessary, start all over again.

try classical music, or i used to find static on the radio that sounded like rain if i turned it low. or a relaxation cd, whales singing, rainforest sounds, (actual) rain, etc…

avoid caffeine – chocolate, cola, coffee, etc…

start the bedtime process a couple of hours before bed – try very hard not to exercise or other vigorous activity for at least 2 hours before bedtime.

one of my problems was my brain never stopped running, so i would read myself to sleep – but i could read for hours.

try counting heartbeats, and noticing them slow as you relax.

try to figure out why you have insomnia. now this may sound REALLY silly, but this is what happened to me (i pulled my first all-nighter when i was 5, slept every other night through most of high school, and had little sleep the rest of the time – for over 20 years):

i learned that insomnia can be caused by abandonment issues, i didn’t think i had any, but tried to look back and see if i could find anything. well, when i was very young (2 or 3 years old) my parents went to japan and left me with my grandparents, nice people, love them, etc… but, i opened my mind to the possibility and wondered if it could have had an effect on me. of all the darnedest things, my sleeping schedule and habits turned completely around THAT NIGHT. NO SH*T!!!

i started falling asleep at 1am, and sleeping until 8 or 9am – quite a change from falling asleep at 5-11am, and being up for usually at least 36 hours before sleeping again.

i went with it, and now, 12 years later only suffer insomnia in times of stress (like now). i can even drink coffee after dinner and fall asleep!! i do generally still avoid caffeine, but it is no longer a way of life for me.

you may be pleasantly surprised at what seemingly minor thing in early childhood could have had more of an effect on you than you could ever have imagined. it happened for me, and i wish you the best.

hope something in all of that helps!!

I saw that ad in Reader’s Digest, and think it starts with an L, but I have that magazine at work, and I am not there now.

Until you get the prescription, you may want to try this out.

Before you go to bed, like about 30 minutes before, eat a small snack. I suggest 1-2 oz of turkey (triptophan – spelling approximate), a cracker or a cookie, or if you are concerned about your weight – a low glycemic carbohydrate, like 陆 apple, and also some nuts – almonds or peanuts are best. Do drink a glass of water with this. This is a recipe for some slow burning energy that will help level your blood sugar out for the night.

If your insomnia is due to your brain seeking blood sugar, because it is getting low, this recipe will help that.

If this works consistently, and you should know it in about 3 days if it will, you may want to check out www.hufa.org for more info on low blood sugar, its causes and things you can do about it.

If you really cannot get to sleep, you go to bed and just want to get up again after laying their for hours, then it is highly likely you have insomnia!

insomnia is the inablity to sleep no matter how tired you are

simply put when you go to be to sleep you cannot , no matter what you do.

friend St. Jimmy3 said:
There are a few things. I’ve just found something called Delayed sleep phase syndrome. Basically from what I understand, it’s pretty much that your hormonal body clock, (It’s what I call it, where jet lag comes from, your body gets used to being awake a certain amount of time, and gets tired after that certain amount of time.)

The cases of insomnia that I have seen or heard of (Not personally) are usually cases where the person sleeps perhaps once every 3 days.

If you are able to eventually get a decent night’s sleep every night, then it isn’t insomnia. (When I say decent night’s sleep, I mean the required amount to keep your body functioning. As you get older it seems to decrease, but as growing I think you need something like 9 hours a night.) Some are fine with 7, and some get even less.

There are professionals that will diagnose a patient properly, and often the case is that they diagnose them with insomnia, when it is something called a circadian rhythm disorder.

.

The doctor said it is ok if I want to give a chronic insomniac, elderly, bed-ridden relative of mine some placebo pills since she can’t take any real sleeping pills. But do placebos really work for sleep?

friend bev1 said:
placebos are nothing but sugar pills they have no medication in them whatsoever. the effects of placebos are strictly psychological. you can give them to her and see if they work they obviously wont do any harm. i imagine that placebos can work for anything though. as long as the person thinks shes getting real medicine it might work.

good luck

problems with insomnia can arise due to a lot of reasons, it can include depression, anxiety, colds, and by what you take in. your daily routine can also impair sleep. as much as possible stay way from caffeinated products and stimulants for they can disturb sleep. try to establish a relaxing before-sleep ritual, like taking a warm bath, having light snack or reading for 10 minutes, avoid problem solving when in bed, try to clear your mind, do some sleep ritual that can make you go to sleep. but if these natural sleep aid habits won’t work on you and insomnia persists, better see a physician. visit http://www.sleepsogood.com for more natural sleep aid tips to have a good night sleep.

friend Lutremi2 said:
i would say, try some of the herbal teas that are avaliable at oraganic stores. There are many different teas that you could try to help you fall asleep. Also, insomnia is sometimes something that needs additional aid because it’s an imbalancment in the brain. Talk to your doctor for sure if the teas dont help.

See sleepWAKING, and insomnia, at http://www.ezy-build.net.nz/~shaneris in section 3. Exercise, earlier in the day/evening, so you are physically fatigued, and implement the treatments. It seems to be anxiety (worry) related. See anxiety treatments, at ezy-build on page 6. Set yourself a fixed limit for worrying about any particular subject, (say; 15 minutes) after which, resolve firmly to refuse to even consider that subject again on that day: realise and accept that to do otherwise would be counterproductive to your mental health, and enjoyment of life. Use the technique for reprogramming negative thoughts and internal monologue (self talk), on pages 2, and 2L, to help you in this, and consider carrying a wide rubber band in your pocket; stretch, and release, as a means of reinforcing it, and speeding up the process, re-pocketing it afterwards. Practise one of the relaxation methods on page 2, in bed, after lights out. Also, give the EFT a good tryout, to see if it helps you. A direct link to it is on page 3c, where starred * and pages 2, 2.q and 2.o also refer. Either of the above is suitable for use in bed: use whichever works best for you, after trying them during the daylight hours.

friend momma2mingbu2 said:
Why not take tablets? it might be the only way of helping you. Try benadryl just once and see if it helps, it has always helped me get to sleep even at the worse times.

friend Maddie3 said:
Yes, the inability to fall asleep, and then waking earlier than you should are both signs of insomnia.

I have had it for more than 20 years. There are several different types, and for most people, short-term treatment with an insomnia medication can be of great help. Talk to your doctor about it. I understand that you don’t want to take medication, but when your sleep cycle is completely messed up, that is sometimes the only way to get it regulated. Also, there are medications available now which are not habit forming, and can safely be taken for brief periods of time.

Explore your options, because one of the problems with insomnia is that you begin to build up a tremendous sleep debt, and that can really mess you up. It can lead to other problems, and also make your isomnia so bad it’s a lot harder to take care of.

Most doctors will start with working on what is called sleep hygiene, and those techniques work fairly well for many people. Responsible docs don’t go right to the drugs. So talk to your doc and see if he or she can help you out.

Best of luck.

Well according to a website people with insomnia have difficulty falling asleep, which may be caused by stress. So if you’ve been stressed lately you might.

It also says depression can also be a cause. Some daytime symptoms of insomnia are:

-Poor focus

-Bad memory

-irritability

Check out this website.

You could try Chrono-therapy.

Here’s how it works.

Sleep from 3 am to 10 am for four nights.

Now start a progression of 3 hour delays in your bedtime:

Day 1: Go to bed at 6 am

Day 2: 9am

Day 3: Noon

Day 4: 3pm

Day 5: 6pm

Day 6: 9pm

Now, maintain a strict 9m bedtime. I actually have an alarm clock with two alarms. One for wakeup and the other for bedtime. Bedtime is the same time every night with no exceptions (been dealing with this problem a long time).

you may only need 4 hours of sleep. some people don’t need as much (i need 8-9)

i believe insomnia is a lack of sleep that interferes with daily life. if you feel tired during the day, unable to focus, etc than you might have insomnia and want to try a sleep clinic or something.

I was like this when I had so much on my mind. It sounds weird but I wrote all my problems down on a piece of paper and placed them in a box, and pretended that was the end of them. Just so I can sleep peacefully.

I would also put on a movie that really involved some attention. If that doesn’t work turn the television off. Drink some tea. Celeste has a flavor called tension tamer. If your room needs to be straightened up, straighten it up and light some aroma therapy candles. Redecorate your room. Also try to include something containing berries in it in your diet each day, rather it be juice, yogurt, ice cream, anything with natural berries mixed in it. Try that everyday for and after at least three weeks you should feel a little more relaxed at night. You can also put on a work out video every morning and done some cardio for about 20 minutes before you start your day. I have tons of tips. If you need more let me know
